This region covers the north-eastern part of Victoria, from the outskirts of Melbourne to the Murray River. It is renowned for its alpine resorts, national parks, rivers and lakes. The region has a population of about 307,000 people, of whom 11.7% were born overseas and 6.1% speak a language other than English at home. The most common languages spoken at home, other than English, are Italian, Arabic, Mandarin, Punjabi and Hindi. The region has a diverse cultural community, with many migrants from the Middle East, South Asia and Europe.
